Insurance Company Does Evil Thing

At the trial, the guy who killed my sister was defended by Progressive’s legal team. If you are insured by Progressive, and they owe you money, they will defend your killer in court in order to not pay you your policy.

This man’s story about how Progressive insurance turned against his sister after she was killed in an auto accident is pretty horrific. Sometimes, paying a company to insure you doesn’t mean it will be on your side because it will be thinking more about its bottom line, and less about, well, doing the right thing.

This made me think about my life insurance policy, and about what would happen to my parents (the beneficiaries) if I were to suddenly meet my demise, and that I should ask for an “in-force illustration” showing me the value of the policy.

But, WOW, turning against your client and defending the man who killed her is just the lowest of the low. [via]

That’s horrible. I hope this turns in to a PR Nightmare for Progressive.

This has completely convinced me to drop my progressive policy. I will be letting them know why.

Good question: Which insurance company is the LEAST evil?

@Jake Reinhardt AMICA. Consistently top rated in consumer reports. I’ve never seen them advertise once.

This is absolutely nightmarish.

Ugh, I’ve tried getting quotes at other insurance companies, but none are as cheap as Progressive for me. Does anyone have any recommendations?

@Stephanie Riggs I just moved my policy to State Farm and for me, they were fairly close to Progressive, so maybe check them out? I’ve heard good things about them in general. I also was switching from Allstate, so everyone else seems cheap to me.

@Sass seconding State Farm

I have to say, when my brother was killed (9 years ago this September) in a car accident, State Farm was wonderful. They paid the death benefit right away, and gave full blue book for his truck (which wasn’t worth that much un-wrecked). In addition, the agent in charge was very very kind — they helped me with whatever I needed. Can’t say enough good things about how I was treated at a terrible time.

@Charlotte And State Farm costs WAY more than Progressive. (Or Geico, for that matter.) Paying more for insurance basically gives you insurance companies that will actually pay out.

@Charlotte I’m so sorry about your terrible thing. My not even comparable at all thing was a stolen car, and State Farm addressed it in a timely way, paid out a fair value, etc.

Fisher’s is such a sad, terrible story. Makes me wonder how I so many people I know can say there’s nothing wrong with the insurance industry. “It’s capitalism!” Terrible.
