Other People’s Salaries, If Those Other People Are Fashion Magazine Staffers

A fashion website tracked down the high, low, and median salaries at Conde Nast and Hearst publications. If you are interested in that, you can click through to this slideshow on Conde Nast salaries or this slideshow on Hearst salaries, but curiously, not a slideshow comparing and contrasting the two (perhaps it is coming, because why have two slideshows when you can have three).

I just had a new idea for a startup: you pay $50 a year and you never have to look at a “slideshow” again, you can just read the damned article.

Edit: Actually I guess this is a terrible idea, because then you’d realize 80% of the “content” on the Web is just a bulleted list of 8 5-word items.

Ugh the worst part is that nothing in either slideshow is the slightest bit surprising. Every single one I went, “Yup, that sounds about right” (even the fact that an online editor makes 2x as much as an assistant editor). There’s something vaguely sinister about people who earn typical New York salaries making their living by implying that everyone should own a closetful of designer goods when the only reason they have any of those things is that they’re given to them by advertisers who want to perpetuate that myth.

I just always always want to know what people are making. I’m not alone in that, right?

@Kate Not at all! You know what would be fun? If this site pooled together the commenters anonymously and did a table of what people do/how much they earn.

Okay, I guess “fun” is not the right word.

@Kate I agree! That’s why I was a little disappointed that it conformed exactly to my expectations in this case.

Also, you guys know about glassdoor.com and suchlike sites, right?

@lalaland I CAN’T EVEN DESCRIBE HOW MUCH I WOULD LOVE THAT.

@stuffisthings Yes! I love glassdoor, I was on it earlier today fantasizing about a job I just interviewed for. There are others???

This slideshow just seems to be… a lie. For instance, my roommate and several other of my close friends are Conde fashion assistants. They make 25 a year. My assistant-at-Nylon friend makes 19 a year. I don’t know for sure about other positions, but it seems irrational that your salary would be doubled when promoted to editor.

@hellohello !!!

Kate (#1,408)

@hellohello $19k a year!!!!!

@hellohello That is crazy low. How can you live and be “fashionistas”?
