It’s Not an Either/Or Question

Did you choose “Fresh Air” over having children?
First of all, I never really felt called to have children. And when I started hosting “Fresh Air,” I had a lot of plants. After a few weeks of hosting “Fresh Air,” I had no plants. I couldn’t even keep up with watering them. I know I’m missing out on very, very special things; things I will never understand, because I will never get a chance to experience them.

I imagine you don’t particularly like kids.
I relate to children much better when they get verbal. Sometimes I feel like when I see a baby that I should throw my catnip toy and scratch them under the chin like I do my cat.

I think we would stop wondering if women could have it all if we simply stopped asking women if they decided to choose their careers over having children. I’m looking at you, Andrew Goldman! (Also, love you, Terry Gross!)

More mad about his assumption that she doesn’t particular like kids. F you, guy. (SORRY, edited my language)

@aetataureate For serious. There are a lot of things I like that I don’t necessarily want at my side for 18 years of intensive care-giving.

I like kids as much as I like any other group of people. Neutral to dislike for most, like a few select individuals quite a bit.

@aetataureate For serious! I’m sure there was some chitchat that was edited out, but the question was a little blunt. Did you choose your work over children? Is that because you don’t like children?

Easy, there!

…except that this is the exact same way I feel about children and it’s nice to hear it from someone who doesn’t feel guilty/ashamed about it?

@Saralyn@twitter I wish we could all feel totally unashamed about our own life choices and our own feelings about things.

I am not so into babies, either. I am OK with some kids, one at a time. I am not sure how this fits in with a vague desire to have one of my own. That’s OK, I think.

she is wearing terrible, TERRIBLE shoes in that photo.

Genghis Khat (#584)

@listen, lady Well phew, I was worried when no one appearance shamed TG in the interview, but you took care of it. Are her shoes relevant to her career?

@Genghis Khat god, fine! whatever! I AM A MEAN TERRY GROSS BODY SHAMER! ARRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@listen, lady Way to really zoom in on the substance.

@listen, lady She really is wearing terrible, terrible shoes. Yikes.

@mof thank you from the bottom of my cold, black heart for confirming this.

I think if we all just refused to answer that question, it would help

@Megano! i think we all know that anybody who refuses to answer the question is just trying to hide their terrible mothering ability.

@redheaded&crazy Or we could ask people who have children if it’s because they hate hanging out with adults.

Jesus, that really is a horrible interview. I think the only way it could have been worse is if he asked her to make him a sandwich.

Thanks for pointing this out, MikeD! Drives me nuts when people do that.
