@sxh Too bad you’re wrong. A bolt is anything that blocks the rear of the chamber, and thus is required on pretty much any firearm. Bolt actions describe a system where you manually manipulate the bolt to chamber a new round, but are not the only systems that use bolts.

She’s shooting a Ruger 10/22 (as mentioned in the story), which is a semi-auto rifle, but still has a bolt (http://www.ruger.com/products/_manuals/1022.pdf).

Finally, there are plenty of bolt-action firearms that do feature magazines, such as Lee-Enfields.

I would like to say, kudos for making the trip to the range. Most people are conditioned to see guns as a scary thing that should be avoided. Someone new to shooting and being around guns probably won’t get all the vocabulary right, or know the correct parts of a gun. I’m not going to criticize you for that. When I first encountered guns, I was terrified, and knew nothing, but luckily I had good resources to help guide me. I just want to disagree with what your friend said. I am the owner of guns. I do not want to use them. I enjoy shooting, it’s a great form of relaxation. But a responsible gun owner also knows the responsibilities of having such a powerful tool, and rarely wants to have to use it.

i’ve been to a shooting range twice! once i went out to a range in rural ontario but because they were too busy, they gave us a 2 for 1 card for the entry fee, which was I think $45. And then between two people we probably spent about $100 on ammo. I seem to recall it coming to $150 or $160.

I imagine it is cheaper when you have a gun license and/or membership to a gun range.

Too bad she didnt get the vocabulary right. If she is loading “magazines” then she is shooting a semi-auto. It doesnt have a “bolt”, it has a slide. If the gun has a “bolt”, it is a bolt action and doesnt have a “magazine”. Looking at the comments — it is sad to see that so many are tolerant of having their 2nd amendment rights restricted.

$65?? I’ve only gone shooting a few times, but it was $10 (including safety briefing and one box of 50 rounds) and $2 for each box after that. Yay, Midwest!

Those warm casing coming back at you are nothing to laugh about! I go shooting often, and last weekend when I was shooting a .22 pistol, one of the shells came straight back at me and went down my shirt, when it got lodged in the bottom of my bra.

I now have a massive blister on the bottom of my boob, and burn tracks going down my chest.

Lesson learned. Always wear a high necked shirt when shooting guns.

I used to go to that building all the time to go to Talas, the bookbinding mecca. I was always so curious, so I was delighted to read your experience. I have shot a bb gun and around 4ish, when my care was shaky at best, I shot a rifle. I remember that experience in vague but certain sort of way.

Heyyyy, my first time shooting a gun was at this same shooting range! It was fun. Best part is that it’s just in the basement of a regular office building.
