One reason I chose to go to school out of state rather than to a much cheaper university in the town where I grew up was because it gave me an airtight reason to move out of my parents’ house. We could’ve saved a ton if I’d picked the hometown school and gratuitously moved into a dorm room or apartment, but I wasn’t thinking that way at 17, and neither were my parents.

I lived at home during college (just a 15 minute drive away) and yes, I felt like I missed out on a lot of the college experience. I was also working a lot so I couldn’t hang out too often, and not being in a dorm meant that I never had the chance for spontaneous get-togethers. This is why I a) have no friends from college and b) have no debt from college.

It’s also great that more people are taking advantage of community college options (my mom was a CC professor!), but it sucks that it comes at the same time that so many CCs are getting their funding slashed. More students, but less offerings and larger classes.
