Another Reason to Go for Gold

Yesterday, Deadspin’s Barry Petchesky and I were discussing what the Olympic medals were actually worth. “One of us should write a post about this,” I said. Well, Barry has beaten me to it. Everyone wants to go for gold, and they should—the gold medal is worth 129 times as much as the bronze medal. Of course, as Barry notes: You can’t put a price on history.

@Megano! They are sort of. How neat is that?! I was just wondering about this last night and I googled it.

They are housed with the crown jewels in the Tower of London! How freaking cool is that?
The reason Olympians bite their medals is kind of a jokey sort of tradition to make sure they are real. When gold coins were in wide use people used to bite them to be sure they were real.
