My default setting is naturally timid, so I was worried about the process. However, I overheard some Spaniards get a terrible deal, and I also knew that it's part of cultural fabric. A friend of mine loves the process, and she would get better deals than I would, but as she explained it, that extra discount takes disproportionately longer, so from a transactional perspective, that should be factored in. Joking with the shop owners was fun to her (and her Arabic was far better than mine), and she had gotten a lot of practice in the Peace Corps.
