Why We Should All Worry About California

California’s fiscal armageddon should also scare the rest of us into action, says Jennifer Rubin at The Washington Post. “If Greece’s economic woes are not a flashing red light for U.S. policymakers, perhaps they will take California’s example to heart.”

The Week’s primer to California’s financial apocalypse is servicey, and also a scary reminder that we all need to worry about “the world’s ninth-largest economy” because what happens in California is not going to be contained in California.

As a Californian, I wake up to more and more news about this every morning. This morning, it was a quadriplegic woman talking about how she’ll basically have no life if they cut hours for the workers who help her out. It’s a totally awesome and not at all panic inducing way to start the workday.

We’re all gonna die broke and miserable in the bay area! But the weather will be awesome when we do?

We’ve voted ourselves into a completely dysfunctional corner. It’s scary to watch. Is it weird that I no longer have any faith in Obama, but I feel like if anybody could unwind CA’s problems, it’s Jerry Brown? He seems to make a lot more sense to me than most other politicians at the moment.
