This post is incredibly useful. So is knowing how Logan ends up spending money, and the Billfold's friendly attitude generally to terrible banking habits. Seriously, just having this sort of thing to read every day is protestant-work-ethicking me into having a proper savings account and not spending all my money on plane tickets, constantly, then surviving on a diet of apricots and no savings, ever.

So yeah, thanks for being a public hot mess, Logan. And quit eating from the mini-bar, Character Logan! You totally know better.

@Mike Dang Okay, that makes more sense. Still a bit of work for you, though! Everyone should have a Mike Dang-type friend - I hope you have one of your own. :)

I liked this! Logan seems to be definitely making progress, and while I would like to see more of this kind of introspection and self-analysis from her, I understand that it can be kind of exhausting and using humor as a filter for Bad Money Management confessions can make it a lot easier to make the kind of posts she's brave enough to write.

@peacheater
Agreed! I like seeing this kind of self-reflection from Logan, and the preview of in-the-works Billfold features from Mike Dang is nice.

So how it would work would be Logan would put the amount she needs to pay all her bills for the month in a checking account, and those bills would be automatically paid through the bill pay system that she uses—she wouldn't be able to touch that money. The rest of the money would be divided into weekly envelopes to pay for things like groceries, and those iced coffees she loves to get in the morning before coming to the office.

This is 100% what I was going through this week. Well, not 100%, because then I would be Logan and I am not, but pretty close? I just do not understand the money. Do not. And then suddenly it will be gone.

@Quinn A@twitter I read it as, like, weekly envelopes rather than envelopes for specific purposes (so that Logan doesn't spend week 3's bill money on coffee during week 2).

I would definitely pay for Mike Dang In Your Pocket. Not a lot, because Mike Dang would not approve of spending money on overpriced apps, but I would pay for it.

How would the whole "give Mike all of Logan's money and have him give her back budgeted envelopes" thing work? I mean, clearly he'd give her money that was earmarked for bill payments, but unless Logan can trust herself to actually use the money that way, she'll still end up raiding the bill-payment envelope to top up her food envelope or her fun envelope, right? Would Mike have to stand over her shoulder and watch her pay her bills, or worse, go to her bank himself and pay them for her?

Depending on how this works, it might not be a bad idea for Logan, but she does still need to make responsible decisions for herself. And while Mike is indeed the nicest (seriously, Mike, you're fantastic), it seems like this would be a lot to ask of him. I mean, not to be harsh, but life can be busy/stressful and some weeks he might have better things to do than figure out Logan's finances for her, y'know?

God, I sound awful in this comment, I'm sorry! I don't mean to be down on Logan, because I think I'd like her if I knew her in person and I'm glad she's trying to sort things out.

Man, I really still take issue with that: "people accusing me of hamming up my dumbness with money as something cute."

Financial shit is hard to talk about. Putting your financial struggles out there for the whole douchey internet to see is super vulnerable and not easy and I really respect anybody who is able to do that. In my opinion, taking a lighthearted and humourous approach to it is one way to make writing about it easier. And part of the raison d'etre of the billfold is to make talking about money easier right?

Anyways I hope this site starts making some money for you two soontimes. I'll click on some ads for y'all.
