Quora Users Define ‘Fuck You Money’
Someone on Quora wanted to know: “What is ‘fuck-you money?” Let’s all find out together!
“Fuck you money” is the amount of money you need to be able to do anything you want to do, including (but not limited to) being able to say “fuck you” to anyone.
—Adam Rifkin
It depends on who you are and where you are, but the most common figure you hear bandied about in Silicon Valley is $10M.
—Michael Wolfe
As Nassim Taleb writes, “You are rich if and only if the money you refuse tastes better than the money you accept.” That pretty much sums it up.
—Nick White
I prefer ‘No Thank You’ money. It’s the point you get to when you’ve got enough money for quite a while, more than a year or so say, and can choose the work you want to do and say No Thanks to everything else. Maybe not quite as dramatic as FY money, but still pretty satisfying.

“Oh, that’s just my mantra.”
—Me (“Fuckkk youuuu, moneyyyyyyyyy” —breathe in— “Fuckkkkk youuuuuu, moneyyyyyyyyy” —breathe out—)

“James Cherkoff, channelling Mike Dang” is so adorably polite!
It’s the amount of money I would need to be a position where I would never have to work a job where I was being constantly mistreated & can afford a week’s stay in the hospital without going broke.

Fuck You Money is a billing amount, too. Usually this is to get out of a job you don’t want to take in consulting – taking your rate from $35/hr to $150/hr, for example. Or from $5k for the job to $50k. IE: Fuck you, pay me.
