How to Get People to Buy Your Book

Baratunde Thurston talked to O’Reilly Radar about how he got his book, How to be Black, on the New York Times bestseller’s list. It was a lot of work for someone who was the former digital director at The Onion, and who has access to people like Gary Vaynerchuck and Tim Ferris: Hiring people to be part of a street team, creating memes and pushing them to go viral, and merchandising. He wound up with “several hundred pre-sales” and has sold more than 15,000 copies since late January. [via]

Are YOU writing a book? If so, you can pre-sell me a copy, and if it’s really good I’ll volunteer for the street team.

“What we learned from this is that people do not buy books. They like to talk about books. They like to talk about buying them. But they do not buy them.”
