I still buy CDs or get given them from the artists in exchange for taking photos, I believe that a tower of CDs falling on top of me may be the cause of my demise.

Not really a fan of downloading movies either (most of my computer's storage space is for photos.) I like buying DVDs for the packaging - search for "Bat Without Wings" and see if you don't start humming KISS songs (it's a Kung Fu movie)

@Norrey: Yes, I've "pirated" stuff that I figure I've already paid for. I torrented some episodes of HBO stuff while I was traveling last summer. I subscribe to it at home so I felt like I had paid for it and would be watching it if I were home (my cable company doesn't subscribe to the HBOGo program). I've also torrented stuff that just didn't record on my DVR and wasn't available otherwise. I pay for cable and I'm not a nielsen family, so I feel like no one's really getting hurt.

I was thinking late last night about this often-expressed "If you can be happy doing something that isn't art, do that" sentiment. And I mean! It's as seductive an idea as any, especially because no-one is going to respond to it with a "oh whoops, better stop self-expression", so everyone who reads it gets to feel special. But is making art something some people will inevitably do and others will not do? Is it innate in a handful of people and impossible for everyone else, or is that a ridiculously pretentious way of thinking about it? Isn't an artist just someone who makes art? And shouldn't we encourage everyone who wants to do that? - with the understanding, of course, that the chances of success are always slim, but then that's not always the point.

@Vox In Deserto@twitter Thanks for the comment, but I think we've explained plenty of times that we're not a traditional "personal finance" site. And actual personal finance sites and people who cover personal finance have called us "refreshing" and "necessary", and plenty of readers have said the stuff we've written have been very useful to them, so we're just going to continue what we're doing.

But yes, if you want to read about "Tips for Setting Up Your Homeschool," and "Spring Gardening on the Cheap," yes, you should totally stop reading us and go to Mint.

I have unsubscribed from the Awl on my RSS because of cross-posts from this site. I know I can filter them, but it'd not worth the bother. The posts here are uninformative, unfocused, and poorly written. Sorry to post this on your article Mr. Fram, but this is a general complaint about this site and i think your article exemplifies the mushy writing endemic to this place, a puerile style that is not needed in the area of personal finance. I think this site waters down the Awl brand. If you want to learn about money go to www.mint.com/blog/

The pomp in this thing. Sheez.

American art-hawkers should take a cue from Jeff Koons.

Man knows how to make a buck.
